GSI Million Bushel Bin Time Lapse

In the summer of 2010 the Ashland, IL Coop erected a new 1.1 Million Bushel Bin- we captured the action from the top of existing cement storage.

A world leader in steel corrugated grain storage bin manufacturing; GSI introduces the 1.1 Million-Bushel Grain Bin. When you need to store large amounts of grain without the labour and handling costs of ground piles and flat storage, the GSI Million Bushel Bin can answer your call.

Built to last, this grain bin is constructed with double laminated, 6 gauge sheets in the bottom rings verses competitor's triple laminated thinner sheets. GSI uses the heaviest sidewall sheets in the industry with galvanized material up to 5 gauge. Six bolt seams hold each sheet securely in place. Precise construction elements hold GSI's Million Bushel Bin above the rest allowing for easy erection.

Russia: 90 percent of feed mills are behind the times in technology

Russia’s feed industry is currently under a great deal of pressure due to a number of factors, which are seriously hampering the industry’s development and could lead to stagnation in the near future. This was the opinion expressed by the Alex Dumoulin, Director General Unigrain, a Russian producer and distributor of feed, at the recent “Grain Industry in the XXI Century” conference in Moscow. According to him one of the most serious of these factors is the technological backwardness of feedmills in Russia. Read more...

Creep feeding can reduce pig feed costs

Creep feeding pigs is one of several ways to reduce overall feed costs, discussed by nutritionist Dr Steve Jagger from ABAgri during BPEX’s latest live online workshop.
Steve said: “Starter feed for pre-weaning piglets is small proportion of all feed costs at four percent and the improved growth post-weaning means it is well worth it.
“One trial showed that piglets eating 4.55kg each of starter feed are worth UK£1.21 (US$1.939) more per pig, as margin over feed, than piglets eating just 3.89kg each.” Read more...

Modified rape crops may boost grower income

Modifying oilseed rape crops by switching off a specific gene to reduce the breakdown of oil could lead to new varieties with higher oil contents, boosting UK farmer incomes by £40 (US$64.043) million.
To date, breeders have attempted to increase oil production in seeds by increasing the capacity of the plant to produce the oil. However, oil is also broken down in the seed with the oil content of rapeseed reported to decline by about 10 percent in the final stage of crop development, as the seeds desiccate. Read more...

UK expected to be a net importer of wheat for the 2012-13 season

The first official estimates made by Defra of UK cereal supply and demand for 2012/13 were released today (Tuesday 27 November 2012). These estimates along with full commentary can be downloaded from here
Key points
  • Poor 2012 UK wheat quality and yield, combined with forecast record levels of usage, means the UK is expected to be a net importer for the 2012/13 season.
  • UK barley is expected to be increasingly used in feed rations compared with last season due to competitive pricing relative to other cereals.
  • Imported maize usage is forecast to increase, mainly in the bioethanol and feed sectors.
  • Poorer UK oat quality is expected to result in slightly higher imports this season.
The next official review of the 2012/13 supply and demand will take place on 30 January 2013

Nurturing the next generation of manufacturing talent

Guttridge Ltd, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of materials bulk handling equipment, is working with universities across the UK to provide inspirational insight into the world of manufacturing. The company’s highly successful placement and intern program draws students from the fields of engineering, design, IT and production and is now into its third consecutive year. By allowing undergraduates to work on projects from inception to completion it aims to inspire participants to take up long-term careers in industry.
Peter Guttridge, Chairman, is personally committed to the scheme. “It is important for undergraduates to gain a true picture of what it’s like to work in industry and hopefully be enthused by what manufacturing has to offer. We make sure that our placement students see a project through from start to finish so that they get a really broad experience. The feedback we’ve had has been really positive, with participants saying that this approach compares very favourably with the experience of spending the whole year working in just a single area.” Read more...

Buskirk Engineering pellet mill operation video complete

The Biomass Densification Division was created to give individuals and businesses an alternative use for their waste streams.

With the rising cost of oil and natural gas, many have turned to using pellet fired furnaces for heating their homes and businesses. Others have found opportunity in pelletising for bulk reduction, sterilisation and reuse of solid wastes that would otherwise end up in our landfills. Still others prefer the convenience and flexibility feeding a complete ration in pellet form to livestock, pets and for use in aquaculture.

Many common biomass products have been pelletised successfully such as corn stalks, corn cobs, switch grass, straw, dry distillers grain (DDG), seed hulls, alfalfa, waste paper, cardboard, animal manure, etc.

By manufacturing “In-house," we are able to customize the die and roller set to match your specific needs. We have the ability to machine the die hole diameter from 1/8” dia. to 5/16” dia. with the thickness of the die up to 4”. Buskirk Engineering dies and rollers are case hardened to a depth of 0.060” at a Rockwell hardness of 50 to 55. Please contact us to let us know your specific needs.
